With sensitivity to the nuances in both ancient laws and ancient languages, Kriger adds greatly to our understanding of gender, slave status, and the matrilineal principle of descent in the ancient Near East. Kriger wrote or contributed to several articles on slavery and the status of women in ancient Judaism and in the surrounding societies. Whipping and rape were routine, but usually not in front of white outsiders, or even the plantation owner's family. There were some slave owners considered to be kind and relatively enlightened — Nat Turner said his master was kind  — but not on large plantations. Only a small minority of enslaved people received anything resembling decent treatment, and even that could vanish on such occasion as an owner's death.
